step13 is Rock 'n’ Roll.
step13 emerges in the Lincoln, Nebraska, music scene from an unlikely and murky musical
background. Hard rock, old country, old punk, acid house and industrial tainted with rites of
passage classical training, concert choir, and marching band are melded together with profuse
freestyle experimentation. The result is Rock ’n’ Roll with a unique verve and driving vibe that
appeals to a broad array of musical tastes.
step13’s performances showcase original compositions as well as works of favorite artists.
Covers and renditions of raunchy, hard-driving rock from the likes of Rob Zombie, B.R.M.C. and
Nickelback contrast with the bluesy, gutsy ballads of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Waylon
Jennings, and the Velvet Underground. Popular U.K. artists, Alabama 3 (A3) and Preacher Boy,
play a critical role in the sound of step13.
step13 is diversity.
The band members’ ages span two decades. They’ve completed master’s degrees and GEDs.
They’ve driven trucks and taught college. They’ve been bouncers and preachers. They've been
interpreters and painters. The diversity cuts across generations, maxims, and cultures.
The beginnings of step13 are as murky as their musical backgrounds. As far back as the year
1999, Arthur Trexler and Connie Herndon could be found performing acoustic and electric
originals and renditions of Tom Waits and the Dandy Warhols in certain coffeehouses in Omaha’
s Old Market. Rusty Coy played rock and country circuits in the Lincoln area.
At some hazy point, a junction of Lincoln and Omaha musicians occurred and took the form of
a rambling jam project, dubbed fondly the Wizards of Odd. Many excursions into all-night jams
finally culminated with the official christening of a project called step13, featuring Rusty Coy on
vocals, synths and drums; Connie Herndon on vocals, bass and keyboards; and Arthur Trexler
on lead vocals, synths and guitars.
step13 is live entertainment.
step13 entertains an active fan-base of local and regional live music enthusiasts and a unique
cross-section of communities. In addition to the audio appeal, step13 provides a distinctive
visual experience that reaches an unusual niche in a thus-far generally untapped market, the
deaf and hard of hearing communities. Large-screen projection, sign language, and visual
effects enhance some step13 performances.
